ONLINE COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT!
Excerpt from Module 1:
More than anything else, Motivational Interviewing is a way of being with people. In a way, MI defies a simple definition because a way of being is such a vast concept that suggests an understanding of others and human nature in general.
Learning the basics of MI will by no means clarify all of the mysteries of human behavior, but might trigger you to consider how you think about human nature and what brings about human behavior change. The founders of MI, William R. Miller, Ph.D., and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D., have defined MI in their second edition book, Motivational Interviewing: Preparing people for change (2002) as:
A client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence.

I am really glad I took this course as my beginning to the process of getting my CSAC. I have found the techniques very practical and usable. I like the ease of Blackboard and it is helpful getting the feedback from both the teacher and co-students. Thanks!

I am already applying the skills I've learned over the past 4 weeks to my private practice, which has created more effective communication with my clients.

This course
will provide an introduction to Motivational Interviewing
(MI), a counseling style conceptualized by William
R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick popularized by their
1991 book, Motivational interviewing: preparing people
to change addictive behavior, which is now available
in a second edition (2002).
The
course focus is on the foundational elements of MI
and the spirit or counseling style that underlies
its techniques. The Stages of Change, a separate yet
compatible model of change, will also be explored.
This course is introductory and geared toward people
with no or little exposure to MI. The ATTC plans to
develop a more advanced course to be offered in the
future.
