Evidence Based Practices

Within the last ten years the addiction field has seen an increase in focus on research to practice, science to service, and the implementation of evidence-based practices. Several initiatives have been created to help with dissemination of promising practices and to increase the collaboration between researchers and practitioners. Some of these initiatives are: Addiction Technology Transfer Centers (SAMHSA/CSAT), Clinical Trials Network (NIDA), Practice Improvement Collectives (SAMHSA/CSAT) and federal grants for addiction treatment expansion which mandate use of evidence-based treatment.

This online course series is another effort to provide knowledge and resources regarding evidence based practices. Course one and two are introductory courses for anyone interested in evidence based practices. Course three is an advanced level course for supervisors and administrators.

Course One, Overview of Evidence Based Practice, is based on the training curriculum developed by Steve Gallon, Director, Northwest Frontier ATTC, and the National Addiction Technology Transfer Center. This course was written by Charlotte Chapman, at the time, Director of Training for the Mid-Atlantic ATTC, with assistance from Dr. Paula Horvatich, Missy Barker, Laurie Rokutani, Denise Pyle, Scott Reiner and Dr. Sherry Ceperich.

Course one provides a brief overview of the history of the addiction treatment field. Definitions of evidence-based practices and discussion of the various federal agencies and their initiatives are provided. NIDA’s Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment along with numerous links to evidence-based manuals are the text for this course. Students will receive a CD produced by Central East ATTC with Dr. Maxine Stitzer discussing the research for Contingency Management and Dr. Elizabeth Katz discussing the research for Role Induction, two promising evidence-based practices. A case study from a public treatment program from the Clinical Trials Network that has implemented an evidence-based practice will be discussed. The focus of assignments will be for students to increase their knowledge about these approaches, become familiar with some of the manual based treatments, and discuss the issues involved in adopting these approaches in their current treatment practice or agency. An extensive bibliography is also provided with this course.

Course Two, Evidence Based Practices in Prevention, is based on the current research in the prevention field. The work of several prominent researchers will be featured. A primary author of this course is yet to be determined.

Course two will discuss the data on various prevention programs to identify which seem to be the most promising and how to match a prevention program to the appropriate setting; schools, communities, public health settings. Principles for effective dissemination of a prevention program will be discussed. A case study on implementing a prevention practice will be reviewed. Students will be asked to choose one of the promising prevention practices and design a plan for implementation in the appropriate setting.

Evidence Based Practices for Supervisors

Evidence-based practice (or EBP) is a significant and emerging trend in behavioral health and other human service fields. The move toward EBP reflects growing emphasis on clinical outcomes and the adoption of interventions which are demonstrated to lead to desired results such as reductions in substance use and related problems (e.g., medical and psychiatric symptoms; criminal activity; occupational impairment) and concurrent improvements in important domains of functioning.

Evidence Based Practice for Faculty
EBP for Faculty is an adaptation of our online course Evidence Based Practice for Counselors, designed specifically for higher education faculty. Definitions of evidence-based practices and discussion of the various federal agencies and their initiatives are provided. Texts include NIDA’s Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment and online evidence-based treatment manuals. Participants will receive a CD produced by the Mid-Atlantic and Central East ATTCs with Drs. Maxine Stitzer and Elizabeth Katz discussing the research for Contingency Management and Role Induction, two promising evidence-based practices. A case study from a public treatment program from the Clinical Trials Network that has implemented Motivational Interviewing will be discussed. The focus will be for course participants to increase their knowledge about these approaches, become familiar with some manual based treatments, and discuss issues involved in incorporating approaches into curricula. An extensive bibliography is also provided.
