Spirituality in the Addiction Counseling Process:
Taking the Power of Counseling Higher
This course is designed to:
- provide addiction counselors with the history and background of the role of spirituality in the recovery process
- present an exploration of spiritual concepts and approaches that have been used in counseling
- provide research on the effectiveness of these approaches
- discuss how these approaches can be applied as a part of counseling in the treatment and recovery process
The instructors will encourage the course participants to begin considering the counseling process from a perspective that can include wisdom about human development and change that comes from the roots of Alcoholics Anonymous and from other non-traditional sources. Despite this broader perspective, the course also emphasizes approaches that have a strong research base. The ultimate objective for this course will be to provide the course participants with a new perspective on their practices and new tools that can increase the effectiveness of their counseling.

Substance Abuse in Congregational Ministry
Overview
Substance abuse and addiction affect not only individuals, but also the family systems and faith communities to which they belong. This series is designed to provide a basic framework of knowledge about substance abuse and addiction to better equip Christian congregational leaders to identify, assist, and support those facing substance use disorders.
These courses are offered in collaboration with Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (BTSR) as part of the Mid-ATTC Faith-based Consortium workforce development effort. These courses have an explicitly Christian faith orientation. Courses may be taken individually, as part of the series, or as part of the BTSR School of Christian Ministry Certificate Program in Ministry Leadership. Unlike other Mid-ATTC online courses, each of these classes is 20 contact hours. The courses in this series are part of an educational partnership with BTSR. Other educational partnerships may be developed in the future.

Adolescent Substance Use Disorders and Faith
Substance abuse and addiction affect not only individuals, but also the
family systems and faith communities to which they belong. This course is designed to provide a basic knowledge framework about adolescent substance use disorders to better equip faith leaders to identify, assist, and support individuals, as well as for addiction counselors seeking faith-infused applications when working with clients. This course will enable those who work with youth to understand their unique position to observe changes, have influence in relationship circles, offer education and prevention opportunities for families, and link youth experiencing difficulties to appropriate community services. At the conclusion of this 20 hour online course, participants will present an individualized integrated theory of faith and adolescent substance use disorders that relates to their particular faith, volunteer or professional setting.
