Chemical Dependency Counselor

 Wilderness Treatment Center

Wilderness Treatment Center is a 60 day inpatient chemical dependency treatment program for young men between the ages of 14 and 24.  It is located in NW Montana on a 4,000 acre cattle ranch. Counselors’ responsibilities include managing a caseload of 6 patients, group therapy, individual and didactic therapy and full participation as a member of the clinical team. The counselor would provide these services within the context of a 40-hour week.  To break up the monotony of the weekly grind, counselors also participate in 3 to 5 wilderness trips per year that are 16 to 21 days in length. Group sizes range from 6 to 8 young men ages 14 to 24 and wilderness experience is helpful but not required. Each trip has two staff, the other one being a qualified wilderness instructor. 

Benefits of this position include: $ 33,000.00 to $38,000.00 salary range, $500.00 annual training allowance and an incentive pay plan that rewards longevity. The incentive plan is based on days in the wilderness and is first paid at the end of your second year of employment. At the end of your second year $20.00 per day in the wilderness, end of the third year $25.00, end of the fourth year $30.00 which is the maximum. The counselor would also be eligible for our matching retirement package after one year of employment. After 6 months of employment and completion of the probationary period you receive 80 hours of paid leave and begin at that point to earn 16 hours of personal leave each month. You will also be eligible to purchase outdoor equipment at our cost on a 90-day payment plan.

Kellogg Health Scholars Program: 2008-2010 Call for Applications

The Kellogg Health Scholars Program is now recruiting for a 2008-2010 cohort that will begin in fall 2008. The deadline date for submitting an application (online applications only) is Tuesday, January 8, 2008 (11:59 p.m. ET).

The Kellogg Health Scholars Program (KHSP) combines the highly successful Community Health Scholars Program (CHSP) and Scholars in Health Disparities Program (SHDP). This program offers two-year postdoctoral fellowships at 8 training sites. Eight fellowships are in the Multidisciplinary Track (which is based on SHDP) and eight fellowships are in the Community Track (which is based on CHSP). The first track highlights a multi-disciplinary approach to studying the social determinants of health disparities. The second track highlights community-academic partnering and community-based participatory research.. Both tracks highlight the translation of health research into policy.

KHSP partners with allies in policy and practice organizations across the country to create a movement aimed at eliminating health disparities and securing equal access to the conditions and services essential for achieving healthy communities. By combining the proven strengths of our antecedent programs, we have created a linked program to develop a cadre of leaders with: the competency to translate research to policies that address health disparities; the capacity to partner with communities in carrying out research and building policy advocacy; and the skills to inform and support policy makers who seek to reduce and eliminate health disparities.

2007-2008 Academic Year: Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University Offers a Research and Clinical Training Program in Juvenile Forensic Psychology with Research Specialty in Substance Abuse Studies.

      Psychologists wishing to pursue a career in forensic research and clinical service are invited to apply for positions in the Brown University Training Program in Juvenile Forensic Psychology. The Brown program, in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), prepares professionals to conduct high quality research and clinical work in forensic psychology. An emphasis is placed on research related to substance use/abuse. Seventy-five percent effort is devoted to clinical work and 25% is devoted to research.

      Weekly seminars and colloquia emphasize conceptualization and conduct of research as well as the conduct of forensic clinical work. The training program focuses on the development and implementation of on-site research under the supervision of trainee-selected faculty mentors. Clinical work is set in a juvenile correctional facility with experiences offered in transitioning youth back to their communities and families. Opportunity exists to conduct research on and/or engage in clinical forensic work with adults involved in the justice system as well.

      A significant portion of the training program is devoted to grant writing. An intensive seminar with substantial faculty input is the major component of training in the first year. The end product of the grant writing seminar is an NIH quality grant proposal. Since 1997, more than half of the fellows who have completed the program have become a PI on an NIH grant. Trainees select mentors whose areas of research match well with their own. 

      Trainees receive a stipend for their training period. Fellowships are for one to two years. Stipends for post-doctoral research fellows begin at $35,568, plus an allowance for travel and research-related expenses as well as liberal health benefits. Limited funds are also competitively available for R and D projects.

The Mountain Manor Treatment Center  provides a full continuum of adolescent outpatient and inpatient substance abuse treatment services at facilities located in Baltimore  Maryland. Our research division focuses on developing and evaluating innovative behavioral and behavioral -- pharmacologic interventions  for adolescents with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders  (e.g., ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder).  The clinic is affiliated  with Johns Hopkins University School Of Medicine and with the  National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network.
