COMPETENCIES

Addiction Counselor Competencies:
The Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes of Professional Practice,
CSAT's Technical Assistance Publication (TAP) #21
written by the ATTC National Curriculum Committee

The ATTC Curriculum Committee completed a landmark document for the substance abuse treatment field entitled Addiction Counseling Competencies: The Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes of Professional Practice - Technical Assistance Publication #21 (The Competencies). This important document, published and supported by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), has become a benchmark by which curriculum is developed and educational programs and professional standards are measured for the field. The Competencies set forth the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be an effective substance abuse treatment counselor. Since its publication in 1998, this document has been widely accepted by a diverse group of educators, credentialing bodies and practitioners as a definitive reference in the study and practice of addictions treatment.
